We are approaching Spring and that means our hens are nearly a year old. It was this time last year that we decided to start our backyard chicken adventure and there are no regrets! If you are thinking about adding chickens to your life, here are a few suggestions
we have:

  • Decide the location. Where you put the coop and play area is important. You need to think of the bird's safety from the environment and from predators.
  • How big will their home be? As we found out, the cute pre-made coops are so cute, but they are not the best choice. We added on.
  • What breeds make sense to you? There are so many to choose from! We picked out two Easter Eggers, one Colombian Wyandotte, and one Barnevelder. They have friendly dispositions, are good layers, and they are so beautiful.
  • Where will you keep the babies until they are old enough (about 5 weeks) to move to the outside.
We found our babies at the local feed store. It was too hard to resist on that warm and sunny day in April. They were three days old and their little chirps sucked my mom and me in. We excitedly brought our fuzzy babies home, using a plastic bin to house them. Yay! We became chicken people!

I highly recommend going to My Pet Chicken! Their tool to choose breeds that suit your needs is handy and fun to play with. I had been reading about the different breeds for weeks, trying to decide. Do you want chickens that are heavy egg layers? Do you have severe cold to deal with? So many things to think about!!

Another fun and helpful site that we go to frequently is Backyard Chickens. They have forums where you can ask and get answers to anything chicken!

We hope you love chickens as much as we do!!
This is a safe place to talk about all things chicken...except talk that involves a crock pot!!!
Leave a comment and a picture of you flock, no matter the size!!
